'Fewer tourists, higher prices' in Algarve hotel and AL sector

HOTELRECEPTIONGALEHotels and Alojamento Local tourist accommodation businesses across the Algarve, saw a 3.5% increase in earnings in October compared to the same period of 2017, despite a 1% drop in the occupation rate.

"The volume of sales increased by 3.5% in October, reported the region’s Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of Algarve association (AHETA) in the summary of its monthly report.

The average occupancy rate was an impressive 71.2% but there was a decline in numbers, mainly due to the British (-6.8%), the Dutch (-13.4%) and the Irish (-6.5%).

The situation was turned around by the impressive numbers of Portuguese tourists choosing the Algarve for their breaks, up a full 14.5% in October.

The October drop in numbers is nothing new, overall volume has been falling all year with a Jan to October decline of 1.5% in the average occupancy rate per room.

On the plus side, turnover since January has risen 3.1%
