Former Faro Health Sciences building to provide student accommodation

studentsgraduationThe University of Algarve has signed up to the National Fund for Building Rehabilitation and now will study the feasibility of converting the former School of Health Sciences, near the prison, into student accommodation and housing for lower-income families.

This National Fund is managed by Fundestamo which provides student accommodation and homes for families who, while not in urgent need, have difficulty finding suitable housing at prices they can afford.

The Fund does not require money from the State Budget, nor does it oblige the University to take on a load of debt.

According to the President of Fundiestamo, Alberto Souto Miranda, "the real estate involved will cost €19 million: plus €18 million for conversion – a total investment of €37.7 million."

The University’s rector needs to discover if it is economically feasible to transform the premises into a university residence as this, obviously, is the start point of the decision-making process.

More accommodation urgently is needed for the University’s student population, especially affordable accommodation.

The School of Health Sciences move to the Gambelas campus earlier this year, so converting the old building for accommodation should not be too hard a decision to make.
