Rain, strong winds and high seas return to Portugal mainland this weekend

RainLogoPortugal’s weekend weather will be stirred up by the approach of a frontal system, bringing rain, strong winds and high seas.

Friday is OK, sunny in the Algarve with weak wind but things will deteriorate - starting on Saturday.

"For Saturday and Sunday we have worsening weather. We have the approach of a frontal system to the mainland bringing persistent rain on Saturday afternoon until the end of the day," according to Cristina Simões from the IPMA weather service.

The rain and wind will continue through Sunday with waves of more than four meters along much of the coast.

"Temperatures will continue without much significant change until Sunday, when a 2-3°C drop in temperature is expected," said Simões.

The mainland is faring better than the Azores which has been hit with winds peaking at 122kmph.

Ten mainland districts will be on orange and yellow alert between Saturday and Monday due to dangerous sea conditions. Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be on orange alert from Saturday morning until Sunday at noon due to waves reaching a height of 5 to 6 meters, some rising to ten metres during a period of unpredictable turbulence.

These districts will then switch to yellow alert until 6:00 am on Monday morning.

The IPMA has issued a yellow warning for Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja due to the strong easterly wind, with gusts to 70 kmph at the coast. This high wind warning will be in effect between 18:00 pm on Saturday and 09:00 am on Sunday.

The Algarve will be 17 to 18°C during the day, all of next week, but will be generally rainy with only occasional sunshine.
