New technology water meters for customers in Silves

water2Silves Council’s water services department is starting to install water meters that transmit readings to the billing centre.

"This system works by installing a highly accurate volumetric meter, equipped with a radio transmitter module for remote reading and processing of various data, including water use volume and leak detection information, among others," says the Council.

“The data generated by the radio transmitter is captured through a mobile radio receiver system and subsequently used for billing.”

The system also enables the "quick reading of counters and the reduction of human error in the billing process."

To date, more than 230 of the new metres have been installed in a tourist development in Alcantarilha.

Further water meters have been installed in Benaciate and Lavajo, with fifty more already working away in Armação de Pêra.

This new system represents, "a qualitative and technological leap forward in the management of the water supply system, of strategic importance, which the Municipality of Silves intends to gradually extend to the entire municipality."

Does this help the elderly Brit couple in their seventies living for years on an illegal (!) Algarve housing estate along with other Brits who parked their car to block their water meter being removed. But by trickery it was taken out and they had then to wash in, and get water from, a local Leisure Centre. The engineer taking the meter out helpfully saying in effect "Go on, old British, tell the world we Portuguese have cut off your water". What is the update on this story, Ed?

Any information on the safety of these meters?
They are emitting radio frequency energy that some say is a health risk
