Weekend drivers - drunk, speeding, on the phone and uninsured

breathalizerOver last weekend, which included ‘World Day of Road Victims’ on Sunday, 149 drivers were done for drunk driving and 586 were caught speeding.

On Saturday and Sunday, the GNR detected 1,608 infractions, including excess speed, driving with a higher blood alcohol level than allowed by law, no MOT (87), lack of seat belt (49), 41 tachograph related infractions, 29 cases of driving while on the phone and 28 for lack of insurance.

Of those stopped, the GNR found wanted drug traffickers and thieves, and others wanted for domestic violence incidents.

Guns were found in some vehicles, also hashish, heroin, cocaine, cannabis and replica weapons.

On Sunday, the vice president of the National Highway Safety Authority, Fernando Moutinho, commented that 80% to 95% of road accidents are caused "by the behaviour of the driver."

Perhaps this returnee from Oop North can be forgiven for saying that there is right, and wrong, on both sides. Algarve drivers behave much the same as those of our European 'neighbours' and Belgians the scariest, sorry! If our kids are properly educated, this can all be vastly improved and where did young and old get the idea they can rush into the path of oncoming traffic risk-free if they are on, or merely near, painted strips? Be safe!

Statistics can be produced to claim any side in a discussion... ask any student.
In other words, don't rely entirely on them get other opinions and facts.

What a scary statistic - almost as many people driving without insurance as driving while on the phone!

This is really scaring…. and we have to wonder if there are also "normal people/drivers in Portugal" . Anyway these checks fully proof what we all suspected and now it's prooven. Qiestion is: what will the gov do in order to "normalise" the situation. Probably nothing, as it is Always the case.

Now - this should be a cue for many of your past correspondents to come here and finally admit that all their wazzocking (technical term) on about the abolition of motorway tolls stopping crashes and deaths on other roads was totally wrong. 100% misguided, 100% wrong.

Will they do so? I start holding my breath ... now.

Portuguese should be banned from driving. They are a liability to us and to themselves. Give them all a donkey.
