A Computer hacker has been arrested in Faro, suspected of stealing more than €100,000 using other people’s credit card numbers.
Monday’s arrest was ordered by the Public Prosecutor's Office which accuses the suspect of computer fraud.
"There is suspicion that the detainee, a Portuguese national, illegitimately obtained details of several credit cards and used them during the summer at a luxury hotel in Vilamoura, to complete transactions amounting to more than €100,000,” according to the Public Prosecutor’s statement.
The police added that the suspect, "accessed bank accounts in China, Israel and Chile, and by using credit card details, made payments to hotels of tens of thousands of euros."
The detainee, a 22-year-old student, with no existing criminal record, will be up before the court which will decide whether he will be held in custody until his trial date.
