Two crushed to death by lorry in Portimão

INEM125A couple died in a road traffic accident on Friday morning on the EN124 near the Portimão A22 motorway junction.

The accident happened at 11:00am and involved a car being crushed by a truck as it overturned on the roundabout.

A 75-year-old man, the driver of the car, was declared dead at the scene. The badly injured 73-year-old woman in the passenger seat was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

The clear-up operation lasted all afternoon. Traffic was blocked on the road connecting Portimão to Silves and Monchique.  The road was reopened at around 6:00 pm.

The elderly couple was from the municipality of Monchique.

Maria Jesus Serrão, 73, and her husband, António Serrão Nunes, 75, were part of the church choir and helped in parish activities and religious celebrations, giving communion to people who could not go to church because of sickness or immobility.

Monchique mayor, Rui André, commented, "I was very upset when I realised who the victims were because they are friendly people and with whom we interact daily," adding that he was shocked by the news.
