Marcelo sets October date for general election

4794The Portuguese will go to the polls next autumn to chose their MPs, and hence their government, on a date confirmed on Friday by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, after consultation with the various parties.

The official Presidency website states that, "after hearing the political parties represented in the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Republic defined the 6 October 2019 for the holding of legislative elections."

The parties met with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a round of hearings that ended up with the date being agreed.

The legislative elections in the autonomous region of Madeira will be on a different day, 22nd of September.

The time frame defined by the Electoral Law establishes that the legislative elections must take place between 14 September and 14 October of the year in which the legislature ends, and the autonomous regional elections between 22 September and 14 October.

Before the October legislative elections, there will be European elections to choose the Portugal’s representatives at the European Parliament. These elections will take place on the 26th of May 2019.
