A people trafficker has been arrested in the Alentejo after a warrant was issued to the Judical Police.
Evidence has been collected of suspicious activities associated with labour crews from Eastern Europe which had been working in farms.
Searches found various documents showing money transfers relating to the hiring out of men and women for agricultural work in the lower Alentejo region.
The victims responded to job offers posted on the Internet for agricultural work in Portugal.
Once in the country, their documents were taken from them and they were made to work under threat for little or no money.
The workers also were forced to live in inhuman conditions and were poorly fed.
The 40-year-old detainee has been in court to hear the charges against him and has to register at the police station every two weeks until his trial.
