Wintry temperatures all week

frost2Portugal’s nighttime temperatures are to remain very low until the end of the week with some regions hitting minus 5°C.

The nights will be very cold but the days will be cheerier, with maximums as high as 18°C, according to the weather service.

The skies may be a bit cloudy throughout the week and there will be frost across the country, especially in the interior regions which also will have some fog in places.

According to the IPMA’s Ângela Lourenço, generally the minimum temperatures will be below zero, even near the coast which is usually warmer.

"In the interior regions, the minimum temperatures can reach -05 or -04 with maximums at around 16/17°C," she added.

Due to the low minimum temperatures, the IPMA has put 14 districts on yellow alert, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém, Portalegre, Évora, Setúbal, Beja and Faro until 10:00 am on Wednesday.

"These minimums are normal for the time of year and are not exceptionally low. We are talking about January, it’s winter. It has to do with the position of an anticyclone in the north of the Iberian Peninsula that has not allowed fronts, which bring rain," explained Lourenço.

Over the coming week, the western Algarve will have zero degrees at night, rising to 16/18°C in the day.

The eastern Algarve will have nighttime lows of between 3 and 5°C and daytime highs of 13 to 15°C.

The central Algarve will have nighttime temperatures of between 3 and 6°C and daytime highs of 15 to 18°C.

Yes, Lourenço is right, it’s winter.
