Ed, the statue whose image you use to illustrate this piece adorns the Old Bailey in London. Does Portugal use or even possess any similar image of even-handedness?

Time and again in Portugal the Police are paralysed by the criminal or anti-social activities of of a fidalgo (local quasi nobleman) or his clan or their friends. King Gob was a previous example finally banged up after years of locals having the certainty he was a bad 'un. Is this why around one third of Portuguese police are having mental health treatment? Having to work with both the old Portuguese laws that let important people police themselves - or not - and this recently arrived, largely incomprehensible, EU driven "Citizens Equal Rights" nonsense.
