Each resident in Portugal produced, on average, around 487 kilograms of urban waste in 2017.
The statistics were revealed last week by the National Statistics Institute and show a high disparity between the various Portuguese municipalities.
'O Negócios' has produced a useful interactive chart showing that Albufeira, due to its enormous inflow of tourists, produced the most garbage in the country with other tourist hot-spots in the Algarve showing well above average figures.
Other areas popular with tourists show high levels of waste produced, including Lisbon (635 kilos) and Porto (658 kilos), because much of the waste is produced by tourists, not inhabitants.
The North and Centre of the country show municipalities with below average garbage production with Celorico de Basto, Braga, having the lowest index at 260 kilos, less than half the national average.
The national average of 487 kilos for 2017 was the highest amount since 2011 (490 kilos) and was the fourth year of rising rubbish production per inhabitant.
