The number of people who acquired nationality in an EU state, fell an average of 17% during the year 2016 - 2017 and 28% in Portugal, according to data released by Eurostat.
In total, 825,000 people acquired nationality in one of the 28 EU member states, down from 841,000 in the previous year.
Portugal is one of the 13 states that follow the downward trend of the EU, with the number of people granted nationality, down 28% to 18,022 despite government efforts to attract more citizens to help couter the grinding demograpic trend of more pensioners and fewer taxpayers.
In Portugal, nationality was granted to Brazilians (33.8%), followed by Cape Verdeans (14.4%) and Ukrainians (10.6%).
In the EU, Morocco (8.2%) was the main country of origin for new European citizens, followed by Albania (7.1%) and India (3.8%).

Check out Wikipedia... it will tell you that "third world country" is a term relating to the Cold War.

Marta:
What you have identified ... could describe some parts of Britain.
Taking that into account, there are affluent areas too, and the same applies to Portugal.
I would suggest that expats should not confuse the Algarve with mid to North Portugal, because this is where Portugal's wealthy people reside and yes there are also working class and poor people.
Portugal is different to Britain, Ireland, France and so on, as Portugal is influenced by other Southern European countries because the weather, food and musical traditions and these impact on the culture in a positive way.
As a society, the term “third world country” refers to countries with high mortality rates, especially infant mortality rates. They also have an unstable and inconsistent economy. These are countries that contain massive amounts of poverty and in some cases have fewer natural resources than other nations throughout the world. These countries often have to rely on more industrialized countries to aid them and help stabilize their economy.
These countries usually lack economic stability because of the lack of a functioning class system. Usually, the country will have an upper class and a lower class. Without a middle class to fill the gap, there is almost no way for a person to escape poverty because there is no next step for them on the economic ladder. This also allows the wealthy to control all the money in the country. This is detrimental to the economy of the country, and both increases and helps to sustain the poverty running rampant throughout the country while allowing the upper class to keep their wealth to themselves.
These countries often accrue a copious amount of debt from foreign countries because of the constant aid they need from other countries to keep their economy afloat and provide some financial stability to the citizens of the country. Sound familiar?
