Eight illegal workers nabbed in Albufeira

SEFOfficers from Portugal’s Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) announced today that eight people have been identified as illegal workers in various establishments in Albufeira.

A surveillance operation was mounted to spy on staff at two restaurants and one laundry, all in Albufeira.

The workers were given 20 days 'voluntarily to leave the country.'

According to the SEF, proceedings have been started against the employers who face fines of between €6,000 and €25,000.

SEF's inspections also have been carried out at motor homes in the Algarve region, with the stated aim of ‘controlling the stay of foreigners in the country.’

This exercise identified 38 foreigners on the beaches of Furnas and Barranco, in the Vila do Bispo council area, but, "no infractions were detected regarding irregular stays in Portugal."

It's common knowledge that most of the guys working in construction, gardening, pool cleaning and in the horeca are either illegal immigrants or legal grey workers. There are more and more small companies refusing to do the jobs in case the owner claims an invoice… Why is that so ?

These illegals should have arranged their illegal work with a Portuguese advogado as happens up Beja way. Amazingly, as we read here in ADN a couple of years ago, one advogado (as so often the son of a Salazar era judge) spent several years managing an illegal slavery racket; including forging signatures to submit accounts under different names. In Portugal, so often dabbling on the wrong side of the law by advogados and solicitors is seen as character building so not a blemish on this advogado's career when the Romanian mafia end was unravelled and his work was discovered. Straight back to work after a couple of months in the slammer - the case against him being archived as his obviously influential supporters felt he could not be tried fairly on his own as his business partners had legged it back to Romania. An honourable outcome with lashings of honour satisfied?
