Castro Marim council has authorised redevelopment and rehabilitation works to the municipal market in an project that starts now but will only be finished by ‘the end of the year.’
The work includes the complete replacement of the roof of the building, the redevelopment of outdoor retail areas and the fountain.
Two areas will be designated as retail space for local products such as juices, regional sweets and strong, heady spirits.
The area outside the market will be redesigned with the repositioning of existing street furniture and the installation of two panels of decorative tiles from North Africa.
The contract for the rehabilitation of the municipal market has an execution period of nine months and it is hoped by the city fathers that it will provide a boost to local economic development based on the promotion of local products.
The mayor, Francisco Amaral, has many plans for Castro Marim so as to increase productivity and competitiveness, revitalise arts and crafts and the production and sale of local products. Amaral is intent on promoting and enhancing Castro Marim’s cultural and natural heritage while at the same time improving the living conditions of his flock and promoting the area and its heritage factor - every mayor's dream blueprint, let's hope the money is there to pay for these plans.
