Madeleine McCann’s parents have been presented with a €27,000 bill for legal fees for Gonçalo Amaral (pictured), the Portuguese policeman who accused them of killing their child.
Kate and Gerry McCann lost a libel case against the former detective.
Three-year-old Madeleine vanished from her room during a family holiday in Praia da Luz, in 2007.
In his book, published in 2008, Amaral claimed that Kate and Gerry accidentally had killed their daughter and covered up the death by pretending she had been abducted.
Amaral had overturned their initial damages award over his book, The Truth Of The Lie and the decision in his favour was upheld by another court.
Documents at Lisbon Civil Court show that Amaral had huge debts when he wrote his book.
Netflix viewers recently have been led to the conclusion that Madeleine was secretly drugged by a kidnapper who later broke into her room and snatched her.
Theories continue to swirl around the case, twelve years after Madeline went missing.

Quoting Darcy:
I think the McCaans more than paid for their negligence in leaving the children, doesn't negate the fact that Amaral is a corrupt liar who has profitted from their grief, total lowlife.
The disgraceful thing in the Mc Cann investigation, is that the Mc Cann's are guilty of abandoning their three infants in an apartment, while they had drinks with their friends, and they were never charged with this crime.
Just bring a spare pair of underpants to leave behind - soiled.
Sounds like a very British solution ...
