Portugal - a refuge for homosexuals fleeing Brazil

holdinghandsSpanish newspaper, El Mundo, says that Portugal is a "safe haven" for the Brazilian LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex' community.

The article, published this Monday, reveals that since Jair Bolsonaro was elected as the 38th President of Brazil, Portugal has become a safe haven for the LGBTI community that is fleeing Brazil because of homophobic attacks.

Hundreds of LGBTI Brazilians who, according to El Mundo, have chosen Portugal as a refuge after suffering homophobic attacks with many murdered due to their sexuality.

Brazil leads the world in the number of murders of LGBTI people. According to the NGO Grupo Gay da Bahia, between 2011 and 2018 in Brazil, there have been 4,422 homicides where homophobic intent was shown.

This trend has increased during the second half of 2018, after Bolsonaro was elected, a man who admits to being "proudly homophobic" and who said he would prefer any child of his to be dead rather than gay.
