Lagoa protestors silenced in public meeting

LagoasBrancasSmallLagoa Council remains deaf to protests over environmental crime at Alagoas Brancas where it is keen to see a supermarket built on an important  wetland site.

Campaigners trying to save the natural area in Lagoa were ordered to be silent in a recent council meeting.

Tempers flared when members of the public tried to challenge statements made by officials about the site.

When they were told not to speak one campaigner questioned 'what had been won on 25 de Abril' if the public is not allowed to speak out against injustice and for the environment.

The campaigner then was roundly attacked by a council member for trivialising '25 de Abril'.

Campaigners believe that this type of intimidation prevents many local residents from actively supporting this campaign in public.

Local residents are afraid to go against the council even though they are concerned about the environmental crime which the council is committing at Alagoas Brancas.

Meanwhile the council still refuses to save the wetland despite the public outcry against its destruction.

How many shopping possibilities do we need in the Algarve? And then to destroy such beautiful wetland... Think ahead Council. You need this land in years to come for the health of people, animals, the Algarve and Portugal

Such a beautiful place needs to be protected. Tourism and visitors will disappear when these things are destroyed. Sad that there don’t appear to be environmental laws which are implemented

The name of the council member who was so offended by reference to 25 de Abril is Jose Inacio. He is ex- president of Lagoa Council from PSD party. It was during his time in office that this 'agricultural' land was quickly changed to allow development before the law changed to freeze the status of all 'agricultural' land in Portugal.
No website just a very busy Facebook page. Look up 'Salvar a lagoa de Lagoa - Save Lagoa's Lagoon'

Which council member? Name names! And do the campaigners have a web site?
