Two men in their 80s have died and two were injured following an accident on Saturday night on the IC1, near Santana da Serra, Ourique.
The collision occurred at about 8:50pm when a vehicle, carrying the friends from near Santana da Serra, entered the IC1 from the EN393.
The vehicle was rammed violently by a jeep driven by a British citizen who was traveling on the IC1.
According to Mario Batista, commander of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Ourique, "it was a collision between a passenger and a goods vehicle," not revealing the causes of the accident or any more details, pending a GNR inquiry.
The occupants had been at a picnic near the IC1. In the collision, João Ferro and José Silva, both 86, died immediately, and the third occupant, aged 56, suffered serious injuries and remains in Beja hospital.
The occupant of the vehicle travelling on the IC1, 65, residing in Boliqueime, Loulé, also was injured and was taken to the same hospital but was discharged on Sunday morning.
At the scene of the accident, there were 27 operational volunteer firefighters from Ourique and Castro Verde, and GNR members, supported by 11 vehicles.
The Algarve's INEM helicopter took off but was prevented from landing at the accident scene due to safety concerns.
This was the second fatal accident on Saturday in the Ourique area, after a 25-year-old boy died and a 17-year-old was seriously injured in a accident on the IC1 near to Aldeia de Palheiros, about 5 kilometers from Ourique.

The old man may not have seen him, because he was not there when he looked before getting on the road. It is a big loss for the people of Santana da Serra .
The only thing that bugs me is the amount of drivers joining a road, who switch on their indicators and assume this gives them right of way! All nationalities seem to adopt this method of driving - especially 'white van' and young lady drivers, many of whom have children in the back. Is it my imagination or are young ladies much more aggressive drivers these days? They drive so close that sometimes you can no longer see their headlights which is particularly dangerous when driving on the toll roads and N125. My husband's solution is to gently touch his brakes which sometimes has a good affect!
We have lived here for many years and are very happy, every time i read what terrible thing's go on in the U.K. i am very grateful i live in Portugal

I.M Jon,
You are obviously new to ADN, If you have been reading the ADN regularly you would be aware of the negative comments made by some British reader's about Portugal.
Please note that the British, especially the English, are disliked by hundreds of millions of people worldwide; and not only your former colonies -

I think that some British expatriates believe that Britain ruled the waves, but the truth is that Portugal and Spain taught Britain everything the know, they even supplied them with port when France refused to do business with them.
This one probably deserves a mention because the Algarve Daily News is an English language journal targeting the expat community.
It is really tiresome to read the constant whining of a number of ADN readers about how the Portuguese hate the British. Please note that the British, especially the English, are disliked by hundreds of millions of people worldwide; and not only your former colonies -Brexit is alienating your few remaining friends. Why do you continue to insult your Portuguese hosts?
