Zoomarine expansion into Ecological Reserve supported by Silves Council

zoomarineSilves council has suspended its municipal Municipal Master Plan (PDM) specifically to allow building work on an area of land adjacent to Zoomarine to enable the expansion of the theme park.

This decision was taken by the Council on Monday, May 20, and those interested now have a period of public participation that runs until June 3.

During this period, individuals may submit suggestions or present information on any relevant issues, such as why the theme park is allowed to expand into ecological reserve land at Sítio do Ribeiro (Alcantarilha e Pêra).

The expansion of Zoomarine is planned across land behind the current theme park which is in the Silves council area and includes a cable car, a new wave pool, new parking lots and an area for photovoltaic panels.

The project has approval from the Commission for Regional Coordination and Development -Algarve and National Ecological Reserve.

The Silves PDM is being worked on anyway but Zoomarine wanted permission to expand it operations sooner rather than later.

We live not far from this place - how many hectares are we talking about ? As tourism is a seasonal activity and eco-reserve land is 365 days and nights a year - has anyone thought of building multi-storey parking; putting the photo-voltaics on the roof and installing a non chlorine eco-pool so naturally recycling the water through reed beds and so allowing insects, particularly bees, to drink the water on hot days?

..on the condition that no more captive dolphin on display. Surely the new rides can make up for the financial shortfall from dolphin pimping.
