New Lisbon to Faro train service to take four hours

trainPortugal’s railway company is launching a new train service between Lisbon Oriente and Faro to cater for a rise in seasonal tourism.

There are no spare intercity trains so old rolling stock is being used which will take four hours to complete the journey.

The service will run from Friday, June 7, until September 1.

The old rolling stock was used on the Beira Baixa line between 2011 and 2018 and, due to the slow journey, ticket prices will be cheaper than the Lisbon Entrecampos to Faro service.

"In view of the high summer demand for the Algarve, Comboios de Portugal (CP) will strengthen its weekend offer on the Lisbon - Faro - Lisbon route, creating two special trains - starting on Friday in Lisbon, towards Faro and returning on Sunday.

These trains will run at the end of the day, after the last connection of the regular service between the two cities," said official source at CP.

Great another diesel belching turd dropping train plying the Alentejo. What incredible fwd planning. This is why so many readers use the word retarded in these comments.

What makes you think diesel trains are going to be used? Ed does not say it in the report and presumably you haven't bothered checking on other news reports, because you can't speak the lingo.
The word retarded is used by a lot of ignorant users.

Train Spotter AL..next you will be telling mebthe VSA to Lagos is a fully electrified modern train service. Gotta dash..train isncoming.

Not really because we are talking about the new summer service from Lisbon to Faro. This service will be using the UTE 2240 train, now I wonder what the E stands for in UTE?

The people who use the term "retarded" in their comments, probably use this term because they have an inferiority complex ......

Yet again Denby completely of the mark. The very word is used to describe progress in most instances. However the likes of you keep assuming its personal or indicatuve towards the locals. See the vigger picture beyond Page 3.

Why should i take a 4 hour train when a regular train on the same route only takes 3 hours and if you pre book on line the ticket price is really cheap, the bus Lisbon to Faro, cheaper and 3 hours as well.

Time and again with these train stories - usually closing or not re-opening a route you sense great lack of vision. For example - presumably unknown in Portugal are steam train enthusiasts; just as plane spotters were entirely unknown in Greece until the Greeks arrested several Brits doing so. If Portugal has no steam trains and rolling stock then borrow from further up north. Old carriages are entirely acceptable then, part of the experience for tourists. Themed as with the Orient Express with costumed staff serving regional food. Pulling into sidings to let faster trains past or stopping the night in a heritage town. Then, often mentioned, is reopening the Beja to Algarve route - so I will do it now. But as always EU funds are needed first, not for the trains, carriages or route renovation; but to pay x hundred consultants and project managers. Averaging one every 3 kms. More consultants and project managers being needed on slopes and bends.
