Expats turn smugglers

bakedbeansExpats enjoy a bit of food smuggling, especially when it comes to sausages and bakes beans.

Almost two thirds of people who have second homes outside the UK admit they have secreted away different food items to enjoy whilst abroad, according to a new survey.

Bacon and beans are two highly popular choices, but so is chocolate (35%), sweets (24%) and condiments (20%). Sausages were carried abroad by 10%.

Half hid the food in their suitcase, while 30% used their carry-on baggage.

The majority said they did not know it was wrong to carry food abroad.

More than half said they didn't know of any laws at all, and two in five thought you "couldn't get in trouble" for transporting food.

Schofields insurers questioned 1,244 holiday home owners over the age of 18. It urged travellers to check out the laws regarding food transportation before leaving the UK, reminding people that hefty fines could be imposed.

While a number of items favoured by Brits can be found in Algarve supermarkets, another option lies online with the British Corner Shop (britishcornershop.co.uk).

A box of goods weighing between 25 – 30 kilos will cost £11.99 for delivery and take between 4 and 8 days.

Other specialist online shops catering to expats include the DIY Scotch Pie company providing ready-made pie shells and Red Hot Cuisine which sends spice kits all over the world

Another business that exports to expats is Moonshine Drinks which manufactures kits that allow people to replicate English pub beer by simply adding water.
