Opening of lighthouses to the public are “a great success” in Lagoa and Faro

lighthouseThe project, which opens two lighthouses in the Algarve to the public throughout the months of July and August "has been a success" in attracting visitors.

The lighthouses of Alfanzina, in Lagoa, and Cabo de Santa Maria, at the core of Faro's Ilha da Culatra, have been open to the public since July, under a protocol signed jointly by the Councils of the two municipalities, the National Maritime Authority (NMA), the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (PISY) and local associations.

Both locations have been open every day, except on Mondays, thanks to the young volunteers involved in the project, and will continue to be open until August 30th.

Yesterday, Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa, Custódio Moreno, Regional Director of PISY and Cortes Lopes, Head of the Southern Maritime Department, visited the Alfanzina lighthouse, to monitor the implementation of the collaborative protocol signed on July 1st of this year.

"The project has been a success and in the first month alone the number of visitors to the Alfanzina lighthouse was already 1300, which means an increase of about 20% over the same period last year," said the NMA.

Darcy, engine size determines the Circulation Tax.Not this.Down load Financas E Defesa National 63/2019 18/02/2019.For Table of Charges.Or go the your local Marine Police Station and pay your annual, "Taxa de Farolagem Balizagem".Which might be a new experience for you.The Fatura says(Light Dues) in English. I've been paying it the last 5 years. Originally 2 Euros a year.I was boarded once and asked to produce this Document and my Fishing licence. A footnote;"Show this Document to the Portuguese authorities when requested" Unquote.

Quoting duncan:
I suspect the Jones are not boat owner. The Tax for Light houses and navigation charges has gone from 8 Euros to 70 Euros a year. This only applies to Estrangeiras (foreigners). Portuguese boat owners pay 15 euros and commercial tour boats are less than we are expected to pay. No EU funding required here.

...................................

Fake news .............
Regarding portuguese boat owners, navigation charges are as per engine size and not locals verses foreigners.
Foreigners may get a bad deal where you come from, but this is not replicated every where in the world.

We have been to Alfanzina and did find it busy pushing up and down the stairs. But it is amazing that a local feature intending opening its doors for tourism in a country like the UK would need just a Health and Safety check by the Fire Brigade; maybe the Tourist Board visit and the Council. Then, having accepted any limitations on visitor numbers etc (i,e, how many can be on the stairs at one time); go for it.
Here numerous protocols have to be signed with numerous organisations and substantial EU structural funds allocated. No doubt, after administration overhead deductions, small amounts finally reaching those directly involved. No EU funds ... no opendoor lighthouses.
