The GNR might get more sympathy if they didn't swagger around like stormtroopers.

Quoting Norman Crocker:
The GNR can be very understanding if you talk politely to them. No excuses on this one.
This is very true, people need to remember you're talking to human being uniform or not. If you're polite and show respected you'll get the same treatment.

Sorry Daphne, its not a tough one at all. It's very straight forward. If you are driving and a GNR officer stands there and tell you to stop YOU STOP! You stop and explain to the officer WHY you think you need to proceed. This has actually previously happened to me, during a fire, and after explaining I was waved on. The GNR can be very understanding if you talk politely to them. No excuses on this one.

This is a tough one - not exactly black and white. If you have been away for a couple of hours and left your pets enclosed in the house or domestic animals in a pen and, your house is metres away and the fire 'looks far enough away' .... you could not live with yourself for not driving past the GNR. Over him no.
Also remember that the GNR in the Pedrogao Grande fire were directing escaping cars down a road that was already on fire. To their occupants deaths.
