Faro distinguished by EU for “cultural dynamism and creative economy”

faro distinctionOn October 8th, the European Commission published the second edition of the Observatory on Cultural and Creative Cities report, with an extensive sample of 190 cities scattered throughout 30 countries.

According to this international tool, designed to evaluate and demonstrate the creative and cultural potential of European cities, Faro had an average score of 24.9, being one of seven distinguished Portuguese cities, along with Braga, Coimbra, Guimarães, Lisbon, Porto and Sintra.

Cultural dynamism measures the city's cultural pulse in terms of cultural infrastructure and participation in cultural activities. In the area of creative economy, the city of Faro is highlighted as being second in the S ranking (populations between 50 thousand and 100 thousand inhabitants), being accompanied by cities from Belgium, Estonia and Germany.

Portugal is once again highlighted among the countries that most promote “new jobs in the creative sector”, being represented here by Faro, Guimarães, and Sintra, among cities of the same size.

The city of Faro also appears in a privileged position, but this time in fifth place in the "local and international connections" category.

The European Commission also underlined the holding of events such as Folkfaro (Faro City International Folklore), Baixa Street Fest, FARCUME (Faro International Short Film Festival) and the “Best Municipal Culture” prize awarded by the Society of Portuguese Authors, as reasons for the distinction.

I wonder at the cost of this kind of nonsense. It is a kind of mini UNESCO, which I also think is a waste of money.
