GNR fines 77 caravans on the Costa Vicentina as part of illegal camping crackdown

camping fineThe GNR issues 77 fines for illegal caravanning, throughout today, November 26th, on the beaches of Amado, Barranco, Ingrina and the Ponto da Fisga site in Vila do Bispo.

The large-scale inspection took place in the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The objective was “the protection of natural resources and the maintenance and enhancement of natural and semi-natural landscapes”.

The GNR have stated that “these values are threatened by the illegal occupation of these seaside spaces, accompanied by uncontrolled waste disposal by caravans.”

The GNR stresses that it is necessary to adopt an “environmentally friendly” behaviour, as caravanning outside the allowed spaces may not only undermine nature and the environment, but may also be a risk to public health.”

Furthermore, motor homers who camp illegally rather than in designated paid-for campsites deny the region’s economy of hundreds of thousands of euros in income.

Manuel Dias, president of the National camping and Campsites Association has said in the past that this is a rampant problem due to the lack of inspections by Câmaras and authorities.

A 2008 study found that compared to other foreign tourists, who spend around 100 euros per day and stay an average of 5.9 days in the region, the study found that foreigners who bring caravans spend an average of 42 days in the region but spend much less money.

Desirable locations for caravaners and motor homers include public car parks, beach car parks and beach side areas, areas near public facilities and along wide avenues.
