Costa’s government celebrates rising immigration numbers

rising immigrationThe government is celebrating rising immigration numbers after the number of foreign nationals living in the country hit half a million for the first time in its history.

The socialist-led government said Portugal had "overcome" barriers to attracting more migrants, who it says are needed due to the country's relatively low birth-date and ageing population.

"Preliminary data prompts me to say that in 2019, for the first time in our history, the barrier of half a million foreign citizens residing in Portugal has been overcome," Minister of Interior Eduardo Cabrita told parliament on Wednesday.

The minister told MPs that there were 580,000 foreign nationals were living in Portugal at the end of 2019, up from 490,000 at the end of 2018.

The debate in Portugal over migration contrasts with that in other EU countries, notably the UK – where the government has been aiming to reduce immigration.

Portugal is one of ten EU states where fewer than five per cent of residents are foreign-born; between 2011 and 2016 it also suffered strong emigration due to the fallout from the global financial crisis and austerity.

In 2017 prime-minister António Costa's government passed new laws to boost immigration, with the legislation taking effect in the autumn of 2018.

“We need more immigration and we won’t tolerate any xenophobic rhetoric,” Mr Costa said at the time.

The changes made it easier to come to Portugal for seasonal work, casual work, and study; while the process for regularising undocumented migrants was also modernised. Visas and other bureaucracy were also streamlined.

Notably the Portuguese government has also promised a 50 per cent income tax cut until 2023 to tempt back Portuguese emigrants who have left the country for at least three years.

What a load of drivel! Another comment from a little England Ex Pat (is that what they are called). Obviously influenced by the far right British press. Why can't people like her actually research the facts before they put such absolute and utter garbage into print? Fact: Most Immigrants to the UK do NOT go onto social benefits and are NOT radicals, get free housing etc. Most of them make a positive economic big plus into the UK economy. That is a fact!

Well well well, I am not English and NOT an Ex Pat but a legal immigrant and I worked here for 15 years and paid taxes. Further I am talking about the so called refugees, who all avoided Portugal and all traveled to Germany, Holland, Sweden and try to get into the UK. Ever heard about the Jungle in Caleis? Speak to the truckers who have to check their trucks before getting into the tunnel. They are the one's who have to pay a big fine if an illegal immigrant is found in his truck in Dover. Britain is well know for the generous dole money. That is a fact.

Portugal has immigrants who come to work or to retire. Portugal doesn't have the problems that the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Italy and France have. And that is an invasion of so called refugees, all Muslim and often radicals. Most of them won't work and will be on social benefits. Portugal is lucky as they know that Portugal will not give Free Housing, Free Medical Care and Free money. So they will not come here and travel on to the baskets of gold.
