The Faro dock and surrounding areas, the two shelter ports in the city of Olhão, and part of the Riverfront of Fuzeta are a handful areas whose transition from Docapesca management to the municipal authority will be negotiated, within the framework of a transfer process that began today.
Two government orders were published this Wednesday in Diário da República to outline and identify the “port and maritime areas and urban areas for tourism and economic development, not affected by economic activity” that are to be transferred to the municipalities of Faro and Olhão.
The commissions were created at the request of the municipalities themselves, who intend to manage locations currently under the responsibility of Docapesca.
In these processes, which run in parallel, but which are separate for the two municipalities, all areas "which are not strictly affected by port and fishing activities" managed by this public company are at issue, revealed António Pina, Mayor of Olhão.
“In our case, we are talking about the entire riverside area of the city and the management of the Marina's contracts and the other shelter port. The Frente Ribeirinha da Fuzeta and the buildings that belong to Docapesca are also under negotiation, already in an urban area, as is the case of the Captaincy of the Port of Olhão, among others,” explained the mayor of Olhão.
In Faro, the area in question “is that of the dock, behind Hotel Eva and the entire area there that belongs to Docapesca, between the hotel and Portas do Mar”, outlined Rogério Bacalhau, Mayor of Faro.
"We think that this whole area can smoothly pass to us, so that we can manage it," he added. This port does not include the commercial port, which is managed, in both cases, by the Administration of the Algarve Port of Sines (APS).
It seems that the transfer of a few of the other areas in Faro may not be as smooth though. Mayor Bacalhau explains that “it seems another commission will have to be created to deal with some transfer of competences, because Docapesca is under the responsibility of the Ministry of the Sea and the Ports belong to the Ministry of Infrastructure.”
