Algarve waste company in series of ‘open days’

rubbishALGAR is to open its doors to the public once a month to show what it does for the Algarve in waste disposal and recycling.

The first such day will be the 16th of April when the dedicated and the curious can ‘get to know’ the landfill site at Portimão and the facilities that serve Faro, Loulé, and Olhão. This initiative will be repeated monthly on the third Wednesday of the month.

There will be two tours per day of two hours at each site and the visits will have a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 25. (gci@algar.com.pt  or 800 203 251.)

ALGAR is now being run by Macario Correia, the former Mayor of Faro whose new communication strategy for the guided tours includes welcoming school trips.

The company of course aims to 'improve the quality of service it provides to the people of the region" and this week a delegation of mayors and councilors from the Algarve’s municipalities, heads of municipal services and municipal companies, visited the facility in Faro and the Portimão landfill site.

The first part of the visit consisted of a short video presentation and the various services ALGAR offers such as the collection of packaging, composting green waste, biogas convertion to electricity, disposal and monitoring of waste in landfill sites and organic waste recovery.

The second part was a technical meeting looking at the management of the waste produced in the Algarve’s 16 council areas, followed by a debate and an undertaking by ALGAR to improve the collection and sorting of waste at all times, but especially during the summer.
