BAD WEATHER CAUSES 1,016 ACCIDENTS IN THE LAST 24 HOURS - Photo by LUÍS MANHITAThe ANEPC (National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection) counted 1,016 accidents in mainland Portugal between 00:00 and 23:47 on Tuesday 20th October, caused by the passage of storm Bárbara.

Of the 1,016 occurrences were recorded throughout the continental territory, of which 238 occurred in the district of Faro, which seemed to be the most affected by bad weather.

The district of Setúbal was the second most affected by the passage of Bárbara, with 155 occurrences counted, followed by that of Lisbon (154) and Portalegre (107).

The occurrences were mainly flooding due to intense rain, as well as falling trees and structures due to strong wind. There have been no reports of victims or severely damaged infrastructure.

The storm crossed the Portuguese continent during Tuesday afternoon, with heavy rain in eight districts and strong wind across the country, causing red weather warning to be put in place. Due to the forecast of bad weather, ANEPC launched an alert to the population and recommended people only travel if essential.

The expected remaining effects of the passage of storm Bárbara today through mainland Portugal are heavy precipitation, increased wind intensity with gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour, up to 130 kilometers per hour in the highlands, plus extreme rough seas, especially on the coast of the Algarve region.
