Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic, yesterday proposed to parliament the renewal of the state of emergency until January 7, covering Christmas and New Year's Eve, a decision that he had already pointed out earlier this month as probable.
"After hearing the Government, which gave a favorable statement this evening, the President of the Republic has just sent the Assembly of the Republic, for its authorization, the draft diploma renewing, for the period of 15 days, until January 7, 2021 , the state of emergency for the entire national territory, allowing the Government to carry out the measures for this new period ", reads a note published on the Presidency of the Republic website.
This is the seventh time a period of the state of emergency has been requested by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in the current Covid-19 pandemic, to be in force between December 24 and January 7, 2021, and will be debated and voted in parliament today, Thursday 17th December.
