The Klan rides again in the US

kkkIt appears there is no end of hatred in the US as the Ku Klux Klan mounts a new recruitment campaign.

Residents of some towns in four American states (Texas, Louisiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania) found leaflets on their doors, windscreens or on the lawns.

“The KKK wants you” were the bold words accompanied by a drawing of a hooded figure in white robes with Klan insignia. The figure’s finger seems to stab directly at the viewer.

Not shy, the KKK provided phone numbers and website contact details. The US Constitution provides for the right to free speech, rendering the organisation and its campaign legal. Unlike the UK, there are no US laws declaring that certain speech or activity constitutes illegal incitement to racial hatred

The group aims to get rid of President Obama and stem immigration. It is against interracial marriage and homosexuality.

One of its websites says that its leaders promote non-violent defence of white people “in the race war against us”.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre, a US civil rights group, reported that there were 1,360 right-wing, self-styled patriot groups in the US and a further 1,000 or so specific hate groups - a rise in total of more than 800% in the number of such groups since 2008, when Mr Obama was elected.
