Portugal electricity prices rise July 1st

PORTUGAL ELECTRICITY PRICES RISE JULY 1STElectricity tariffs in Portugal will rise from July 1st for domestic customers in the regulated market, reflecting the rise in energy prices in wholesale markets, announced the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) yesterday.

According to the industry regulator "the estimated impact of updating the energy tariff for consumers in the regulated market is 3%, in relation to current prices, on the total electricity bill (with VAT )", which translates into an increase of about 1.05 euros in the average bill of a couple without children (with a contracted power of 3.45 kVA) and 2.86 euros for the consumption of a couple with two children ( power of 6.9 kVA).

In a statement, ERSE said that, "given the reduction of -0.6% in January, with this update, the average annual tariff variation between 2021 and 2020 will be around 0.9%".

This tariff review aims to adapt the energy tariff applied to regulated market customers to the evolution of wholesale market prices, which has been rising, avoiding "recoverable deviations in subsequent years".

The new energy tariff takes effect from July 1st, 2021 and covers consumers in the regulated market, which correspond to approximately 5% of total consumption and 954 thousand customers.

So, who provides the cheapest electricity in Portugal?

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing people to spend more time at home due to teleworking and lockdown restrictions, households are seeing higher energy consumption, causing the price of electricity bills to rise from month to month. Quoting Margaridaana:
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Portugal has one of, if not the highest rates for electricity in the EU.
Maybe a reduction in IVA would help solve the problem, for the consumer at least.

One has to question why prices are so high in a country that is infested with windmills and has solar farms.
