EU to scrap mobile roaming fees

mobmastThe European Parliament has voted to end mobile roaming charges in Europe.

The change is due to take effect from 15 December next year. It still needs to receive approval from EU governments.

The EU has been gradually reducing mobile phone charges under its wide-ranging telecoms reforms. It aims to make the cost of calling or downloading internet data when in another EU country the same as it is at home.

Some customers have been charged thousands of pounds because of stiff roaming fees.

A European Commission survey in February suggested that 94% of Europeans limit their use of the web when travelling in Europe because of the cost of mobile roaming.

Newest technologies will offer even faster download times which is likely to result in more demand for data on mobiles and tablet devices.
