Afghanistan: Portuguese soldiers to arrive back in Madrid this afternoon

Reuters - AFGHANISTAN: PORTUGUESE SOLDIERS TO ARRIVE BACK IN MADRID THIS AFTERNOONThe four Portuguese soldiers assigned to Kabul are on their way back to Portugal and should arrive in Madrid this afternoon. Arrival is scheduled for 15:45 at the Torrejón military base in Madrid.

The four Portuguese soldiers who were still in Afghanistan arrived in Dubai this morning. They were taken from Kabul on one of the last two flights organised by Spain.

The Spanish government announced this Friday the end of operations to remove people who were organising these operations. They ended with these two flights that removed 81 Spaniards, the four Portuguese soldiers and also 83 Afghan collaborators from Spain, Portugal and NATO.

The Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, admits that many more Afghans could come to Portugal in addition to the 116 that the country is already known to receive.

The United Kingdom has announced that it will also complete the operation to withdraw from Afghanistan "in the next few hours", as will Norway.

The evacuation mission in the country comes after the Taliban took power about two weeks ago. Flights to evacuate people from Afghan territory resumed this morning with new urgency, after the attacks on Thursday at the international airport in Kabul, attributed to radicals linked to the extremist group Islamic State.
