17 year old girl dies in 'wheelie' motorcycle accident

17 YEAR OLD GIRL DIES IN 'WHEELIE' MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTA 17-year-old girl, Beatriz Lopes, died yesterday afternoon after a motorcycle accident outside a school in Faro, with no other vehicles being involved.

The motorbike was being driven by a 22 year old man, who "did a wheelie, lost his balance and passed the central separator" of the road, which caused the teenage passenger to crash into "a lamppost".

The accident occurred at 15:30, when the youngsters were travelling along Avenida 5 de Outubro, next to Escola Secundária João de Deus. That particular avenue, located in the centre of Faro city, is separated by a small walkway with several stone lamp posts.

The accident drew "a very large gathering of people" who were soon dispersed by PSP officers.

The emergency and resuscitation medical vehicle (VMER) from Faro, an ambulance from INEM and members of the Faro Fire Department were called to the scene, where the ambulance crew intubated and ventilated the young woman, before she was transported to the hospital in Faro.

INEM also called in its team of psychologists, since the victim's relatives went to the scene of the accident.

Our sincere condolences go to her family and friends.

Brain dead kids on noisy motorbikes do wheelies outside my house every day. I'm thinking of doing the Great Escape trick used by Steve McQueen - the wire across the road.
