In an interview with Publico News, as Covid-19 cases in Portugal rise again, epidemiologist Manuel Carmo Gomes predicts “We are going to have a kind of roller coaster here,” but that “this is not a drama.”
The epidemiologist says Portugal will witness a roller coaster effect when it comes to Covid-19, “but in which each of the mountain peaks will be lower than the previous peak”. Experts warn that if the rise is too steep, it could delay Portugal reaching the target for the latest lifting of restrictions, scheduled to be announced on March 22nd.
As of yesterday's DGS update bulletin, 14,595 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Portugal, which means that the accumulated total has risen to 3,367,469.
In the Algarve, 965 cases were detected, which brings the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 141,011.
As for deaths, 19 were registered in the country, one of which was in the Algarve region. Nationally, the total number of deaths related to Covid-19 rose to 21,267 and in the Algarve to 698.
The DGS report also adds that there were 11,400 recoveries, which brings the total to 2,867,858.
The number of active cases increased by 3,176, now standing at 478,344.
Compared to the previous day, there were 51 fewer patients admitted to hospital units, which reduced the total to 1,174. The number of people in intensive care units is 72, 6 less than the day before.
