Young Portuguese golfer Tiago Sousa dies in road accident.Amateur golfer Tiago Sousa, a member of the Quinta do Lago Golf Academy, has been tragically killed in a car accident at just 18 years old.

The Portuguese Golf Federation today released a message announcing the death of the young golfer, victim of a road accident in the United States,  where he was in the first year of his university course, combining his studies with golf.

The Portuguese amateur was returning from a tournament in the early hours of Tuesday, when the van carrying the team had an accident in Andrews County, killing six players, the coach and the two occupants of the other car involved in the accident.

“It was with deep sadness that the Portuguese Golf Federation became aware of the tragic car accident, which, on Tuesday night, killed seven members of the North American golf team at the University of Southwest, in New Mexico, among them the young Portuguese Tiago Sousa”, the statement said.

President of the Portuguese Golf Federation, Miguel Franco de Sousa recalled, “I had the privilege of playing with Tiago in the Campeonato Nacional Absoluto, in 2020, at Oporto Golf Club, and I remember a young man with a lot of talent, but, above all, with a very pleasant personality and behaviour, on and off the field, irreproachable. I send a heartfelt hug to Tiago's family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time for everyone.”

The Portuguese Golf Federation, in the face of the tragic accident, has decreed a minute of silence at the beginning of all competitions for the next weekend, especially at the Circuito Drive, a national youth championship, which the young golfer played several times.
