Heavy rain causes flooding in many areas

Most of the occurrences so far have been "small floods on the public road, and falling of trees and structures, but none of them serious”, said the Faro District Relief Operations Command (CDOS).

“Despite the large number of occurrences recorded in a short period of time, the situation has now calmed down throughout the district of Faro.”

Due to the forecast of ongoing showers, sometimes heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms and occasionally hail, the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) has placed the Algarve under yellow warning, expecting southeast waves of two to three metres on the south coast of the Algarve.

The Commander of the Southern Maritime Zone and Captain of the Port of Faro, Rocha Pacheco, told Lusa that, due to the sea turmoil, “the inlets of Tavira, Lagos, Albufeira and Alvor were closed to all maritime navigation”, and inlets in Vila Real de Santo António, Faro, Olhão and Quarteira “are restricted to vessels with a length of less than ten metres”.

Rocha Pacheco indicated that “weather conditions are calming down, and an improvement in the state of the sea is expected from Monday onwards”.
