Portugal wins 9 medals at the Special Olympics in Malta

Portugal wins 9 medals special olympicsAs the Special Olympics Malta International Games comes to a close today, the Portuguese team return home extremely happy, with an awesome nine medals, three of which were gold.

Eight athletes and swimmers from Portugal participated in the athletics and swimming events. 

In swimming, Portugal won two gold medals, two bronze and one silver.

Andreia Farinha appeared twice on the podium, winning gold in the 25m and bronze in the 50m backstroke, as did João Carlos, who won gold in the 100m freestyle and silver in the 50m freestyle.

Still in swimming, João Duarte won bronze in the 25m breaststroke.

In athletics, Rita Mascarenhas won gold in the long jump, a specialty in which João Sequeira won bronze.

In the 200 metres, Rafael Dolores got the silver medal,  and André Ferreira got bronze in the shot put (level 2).

The Special Olympics movement's mission is to provide conditions for children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities to practice physical activity and sport, in a continuous and varied way, aiming to increase social inclusion. 

In total, 23 delegations from across Europe and beyond gathered from for the Special Olympics Malta International Games, the first international Special Olympics event in Europe since the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
