Navy divers deactivate bomb at Meia Praia, Lagos

NAVY DIVERS DEACTIVATE BOMB AT MEIA PRAIA, LAGOSThe Explosive Device Inactivation Readiness Team (EOD), of the Detachment of Sapadores Divers N.º1 (DMS1) of the Portuguese Navy, was activated on Sunday, at 12:00, when a possible explosive device was discovered, in Lagos.

The alert was given by a member of the Maritime Police, who immediately requested the support of a the Navy EOD Team.

On arrival at the site, the EOD Team carried out reconnaissance and analysis procedures on the device, concluding that it was a mortar shell. The shell was deactivated on site by three soldiers from the Explosive Devices Inactivation Readiness Team, with two Maritime Police officers and two Amarok vehicles with five soldiers also present at the scene.

The Navy has warned the public to take care “with these type of devices that are sometimes found on our coast, normally with a high degree of corrosion, so any sighting should always be reported to the National Maritime Authority and treated as a real explosive device, they are dangerous and should not be handled or moved”.
