Algarve remains the lowest tourist accommodation sector in Portugal

ALGARVE REMAINS THE LOWEST TOURIST ACCOMMODATION SECTOR IN PORTUGALIn July, the tourist accommodation sector in Portugal surpassed pre-pandemic levels, however only the Algarve region of Portugal remains below 2019 levels in terms of overnight stays.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), released yesterday, the number of guests and overnight stays was 6.3% and 4.8% above July 2019.

In the month under review, the tourist accommodation sector registered 3 million guests and 8.6 million overnight stays, 85.4% and 90.1% more than in the same month of 2021.

In the seventh month of the year, “the domestic market contributed with 2.9 million overnight stays and the external markets totaled 5.7 million”, which represents year-on-year growth of around 9% and 200%, respectively. Compared to July 2019, the domestic market grew by 15.8% and the foreign markets reached the same level.

The statistical office also indicates that “all of the seventeen main outbound markets recorded significant increases in July, representing 87.6% of overnight stays from non-residents in tourist accommodation establishments this month”. The British market represented 19% of total overnight stays from non-residents, with a growth of 1% compared to July 2019.

By region, there were increases in overnight stays in all regions. However, compared to 2019, the Algarve is the only region still below (-4.5%).

In the first five months of the year as a whole, overnight stays are still 4.4% below 2019 levels, especially due to the decrease in overnight stays from non-residents (-9.4%), as overnight stays from residents grew by 7, 8%.
