Dutch rider Victor Steeman, 22, who was seriously injured on Saturday in an accident during the SuperSport 300 race at World Superbikes Championship at the Autódromo Internacional in Portimão, died yesterday.
In a statement, the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), together with the WorldSBK paddock and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, express their feelings at the death of the young rider, 22 years old, who spent three days in hospital in critical condition after having been hit on the head by another rider following a fall from his motorcycle on the last corner of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.
The SuperSport300 race of the Superbike World Championship was interrupted on the third lap after the accident that involved, in addition to Victor Seeman, the Spaniard Gonzalez Perez, both in Kawasaki Ninja 400 and who followed at the time in the middle of the 'platoon' led by the German Dirk Geiger.
In its statement, the FIM reports a message from Steeman's family: “One thing we've always feared as parents of motorcyclists has happened now. Our Victor failed to win his last race. Despite the unbearable pain and grief, we are very proud to have shared with you our hero, who, when he died, saved five other people by donating his organs. We want to thank everyone for the way they lived with us the last few days. We will miss Victor enormously.”
We send our sincere condolences to Victors family.
