The GNR Coastal Control Unit detained four men early this morning after their speedboat loaded with hashish collided with the GNR vessel during a pursuit.
Police seized more than 90 bales of hashish during the operation, to combat drug trafficking in the Guadiana River, in the Algarve.
The GNR statement says "the operation took place at 04:50, in Cais das Laranjeiras, in Alcoutim, following the sharing of information between the Portuguese and Spanish authorities, after the high-speed vessel loaded with narcotics was detected going up the Guadiana River."
The maritime team of the Sub-Detachment for Coastal Control of Vila Real de Santo António “tried to approach the vessel”, but the crew, of Moroccan nationality and aged between 20 and 32 years, did not comply when asked to stop and instead tried to flee.
During the attempt to escape, the speedboat collided with the GNR vessel, which caused injuries to the four crew members. “One of the detainees in serious condition”, having been transported to Faro Hospital, the GNR said.
