Irish clothing manufacturer Primark is planning to launch in the US.
The discount clothing retailer plans to open first in Boston and to branch out in the American north east in 2016.
It already operates successfully in Portugal where there are seven outlets, Spain, Germany, the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium and Austria.
The company’s goods have proved popular, particularly during the difficult days of the EU recession. All of the company's merchandise is made for its own brand names. Its products encompass kids and adult clothing, home ware, accessories, shoes, and cosmetics.
But its US plans follow in the footsteps of some of Britain’s largest retailers who failed to crack the US market.
They include Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
But some fashion brands have had better luck there, such as Topshop and Burberry.
Primark is owned by the conglomerate Associated British Foods, headquartered in Dublin. AB Foods’ profits have been hit by a steep drop in revenues from sugar, but the group expects retail profits to be healthy.
