A film version of the classic TV comedy Dad’s Army is reported to be ‘in the works’.
The original aired on TV for nine series from 1968 to 1977. It has been hailed as one of the UK’s greatest TV comedies. It was voted fourth most popular British sitcom in a BBC vote in 2004.
The news came from comedy legend Jimmy Perry, the co-writer of the original show, who announced it on BBC 5 live radio. Perry then said he did not know too much about it.
"When I signed the contract to release the film rights, one provision was that I didn't have to write anything, I didn't have to do anything. I'm letting them get on with it," he claimed.
Other reports claim that Bill Nighy will be cast as Sergeant Wilson and Toby Jones as Capt Mainwaring.
The programme celebrated a squad of keen but incompetent townsfolk preparing to defend Britain in the face of a possible German invasion during World War II.
Much of the series was filmed in Norfolk where today there is a Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford. Its chairman, who is also the mayor, Stuart Wright, said: "We welcome anything which raises awareness of Dad's Army, and its Thetford links."
Mr Wright added: "However we hope they do justice to what is a national institution, and that it will not be like some remakes which have not worked."
