Post-Brexit rules mean British woman with Alzheimer’s faces removal after 18 years of living in Sweden

POST-BREXIT RULES MEAN BRITISH WOMAN WITH ALZHEIMER’S FACES REMOVAL AFTER 18 YEARS OF LIVING IN SWEDENAn article in a UK newspaper earlier this week has highlighted the need for all immigrants with residency to ensure they keep their passports up-to-date.

An article in the Guardian newspaper tells the tragic tale of bed-bound Kathleen Poole, a 74 year old woman with Alzheimer’s who now lives in a care home in Sweden, who has been unable to complete required paperwork and so threatened with deportation from Sweden after 18 years of being a resident there. Her family have told the Guardian that she is facing forced removal to the UK because she has not got an up-to-date passport, or the financial statements, required under the new post-Brexit rules applying to British people in the EU.

The article, which you can read in full HERE, is a good reminder to all expats in Europe that it is important to keep your passport up to date, and that a plan is put in place to ensure that a competent 'representative', be that a friend, family member or other, is responsible for maintaining your documents in case you experience serious illness.
