A 72 year old Portuguese man died last night after the vehicle he was travelling in fell into the water in the Arade river, next to the ramp of the Calhau pier, in Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Lagoa.
The alert was received by the GNR at 21:10 last night, activating the Maritime Police of Portimão. Volunteer Firefighters of Lagoa, the Volunteer Firefighters of Portimão, the GNR and the Judiciary Police also travelled to the scene. with the support of a vehicle from the Portimão Volunteer Fire Department.
The team of divers from the Portimão Volunteer Fire Department pulled the man ashore, but he was already lifeless, in the water. Death was declared on the spot and the body was later transported by the Lagoa Volunteer Firefighters to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Portimão. The vehicle in which the victim was travelling was also retrieved from the water.
The circumstances under which the man and his vehicle fell in to the Arade are as yet unknown.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office was on hand to provide support to the victim's relatives, and will continue to do so.
