In stark contrast to the UK, the prime minister of Poland encouraged his countrymen to “raise a glass” to celebrate the country’s tenth anniversary of entry into the European Union.
Donald Tusk said membership has been a success, noting that the last decade has been one of great economic progress for the nation.
He pointed to a recent opinion poll which indicated that 80% of people there were satisfied with their experience of the EU.
With help from the EU, the Polish economy has become one of Europe’s strongest.
"I think Poles can raise a glass to their own performance in joining the EU and putting 10 years to good use," Mr Tusk said at a press conference to mark the opening of a new motorway linking Warsaw with the city of Gdansk, which was partly financed by EU funds.
