The latest pollen bulletin from the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC) warms of very high pollen levels in the atmosphere in mainland Portugal, until at least next Thursday, April 27th.
The pollen present in the air comes predominantly from pine, olive, holm oak and other oak trees and also from orange blossom, nettles, grasses, plantain and sorrel.
According to SPAIC, outdoor activities should be avoided when pollen concentrations are high. “Walks in the garden, mowing the lawn, camping or playing sports in the street will increase exposure to pollen and the risk of allergies”, they say.
It also recommends keeping the car windows closed whenever you travel, to reduce contact with pollen. Motorcyclists should wear a full face helmet.
At home, society recommends keeping windows closed when pollen concentrations are so high.
Medication will be the most effective way to combat more severe allergy symptoms.
